Mercury Thermostat Recycling Project

Mercury is a known toxin that may affect the human brain, kidneys, liver and cardiovascular system. Because of its toxic effects on the development of the brain and nervous system, exposure to low levels of mercury can affect normal development of the fetus and young children. In adults, mercury can cause nervous system problems, and possible adverse effects on the cardiovascular system. Fish and wildlife also are at risk of mercury contamination.

Due to the known effects of mercury on the health of our environment, OCEH is moving forward with a Mercury Reduction Program. This program will address issues with products containing mercury, proper handling and recycling of mercury, and proposed legislative action at the state level to prevent the use of mercury.

The Oregon Legislature banned the use of thermostats containing mercury in commercial and residential buildings in 2006. Though the legislature mandated a collection program for the safe disposal of mercury thermostats, many contractors and home owners are unaware of the law. Unknowingly many home owners and contractors are tossing mercury into the garbage, ending up in our landfills as well as our garbage incinerators, where mercury continues to pollute our bodies and environment. We must stop this cycle of toxic pollution! Awareness is the key.

OCEH is working with state agencies, contractors and legislators to ensure the safe disposal of mercury. In partnership with Metro, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, and the Thermostat Recycling Corporation, OCEH is addressing this issue directly through an outreach campaign to Heating, Ventilation, and Cooling (HVAC) wholesalers and contractors. Another item containing mercury that needs proper handling and disposal is Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL’s). CFL’s use up to 75 percent less energy than traditional light bulbs, but currently contain mercury. For more information about CFL’s from the Environmental Protection Agency click here.
